Stresses due to contraction arise from differences in thermal expansion. When a liquid adhesive solidifies, internal stresses decrease bond strength. The most common cause is the mismatch in thermal expansion coefficients between adhesive and substrate, especially when solidifying above normal temperatures. Flexible adhesives or matched coefficients can mitigate these stresses.
